There are 3 main types of flights, namely: International flights, Domestic flights and Connecting/Transit flights. Basically, the procedures are the same, except that for domestic flights, you do not have to do the visa application as international flights. In this article we will only talk about domestic flights.
Check-in: register at the airport to prepare for the flight
Baggage check-in: register to check-in luggage (if any) during the flight
Security inspection: control security
Boarding Gate: check tickets one last time before boarding
Step 1: Check-in
Guests boarding Japan domestic flights can check in at the counter or at a self-service kiosk.
Notes:
Check-in and boarding process must be done at least one hour before the departure time.
When checking-in at the airport, you will receive your Boarding Pass.
In case you buy tickets online, you should take a screenshot or print out the e-ticket (usually PDF file) which they attached in the email.
Normally, it is not necessary to present your identification documents (even for foreigners), but in case you lose your luggage or a dispute occurs, documents are required to prove yourself. You should bring documents which can prove your identity such as passport, driver license, insurance card, etc.
After the airport staff checks the documents, you will be issued a boarding pass with your seat number and boarding gate information.
Step 2: Baggage check-in
After checking-in, you will do luggage check-in (if any) right at the counter.
Depending on the seat class, the flight, and the promotions from the retailer you booked at that time, you may be able to do the baggage check-in without fees.
Note: You should check your luggage carefully to avoid carrying prohibited items on the flight.
Step 3: Security inspection:
Once you’ve completed the check-in procedure and got your own boarding pass, you’ll be directed to a security screening area to make sure you’re not carrying any prohibited items and other threats to the flight.
Remove watches, belts, phones, boots and put them in separate baskets, otherwise the sensor will be triggered.
Sharp objects such as knives, scissors, nail clippers, paper scissors, lighters, matches, etc. are absolutely prohibited.
Be careful not to lose your boarding pass or passport.
Step 4: Boarding gate
Once you get here, you just need to wait to start your flight.
Note: It is recommended to be at the boarding gate at least 15 minutes in advance, because in some cases the airline will not allow passengers to board after the last 10 minutes.
