  • Procedures to receive Unemployment Insurance

Before going through the procedure to receive Unemployment Insurance, you need to prepare some necessary documents as follows: 

  • Certificate of being in a state of unemployment (離職票りしょくひょう). This certificate is issued by Hello Work after you submit your resignation certificate. 
  • Certificate of participation in unemployment insurance (雇用保険被保険者証 こようほけんひほけんしゃしょう). You will receive this certificate when you leave the company. 
  • Other proofs include: Japanese driver’s license (if any), My number card, photocopy of residence card, passport copy.
  • The owner’s bank book has the name of the person applying for unemployment benefits. Stamp. 2 3cm x 2.5cm size card photos taken within the past 3 months. 

After preparing all the documents, you bring them up and submit them at the Hello Work employment center where you live. Along with that, you must register for a job search and attend an unemployment insurance introduction at the center. The specific time will be given by the center.

The procedure to receive unemployment insurance in Japan is not too complicated if you prepare your documents carefully.

Time to do procedures & receive benefits

If you quit your job due to company bankruptcy, contract liquidation, then 7 days after registering for Unemployment Insurance procedures at Hello Work office, you will start receiving benefits. In fact, within 1 month the benefits will start to be transferred to the workers. 

In case the employee voluntarily quits or is fired, then after 3 months and 7 days after completing the registration procedure for unemployment benefits, you will receive the money in the 4th month.

On the first day of checking in at Hello Work, the schedule for receiving benefits will be determined. Every 4 weeks, workers must go to the Hello Work office to certify that they are still unemployed to receive support money. If you delay verifying your status at the Hello Work office on the given appointment day, the payment of benefits to you will be delayed for a long time, so you need to arrange your schedule and adhere to the prescribed time.
